After my father died, my sister Christine sent this letter to me. This sums up all that he meant to me.
Dear Karen:
You probably don't remember, most people don't. But, I thought I could jar your memory a bit, It might make what you're going through a bit easier.
It was just before your birth, God called you aside and said,
"Karen, I'm having a little problem, picking out just the right father for you. You see, Karen, there are a few dukes over in Western Europe, a few rising designers on the west coast of North America, a chief in Africa, and I even have a soon to be governor in North America who needs a daughter.""So, What's the problem?" was your reply, "They all sound like exciting fathers from which to choose."
After a pause, God responded, "Well, I do have one other father who needs another daughter. He isn't rich or famous, and it doesn't look like he ever will be, but as a father he is pretty extraordinary."
"Extraordinary, hmmm, tell me a little more,"you replied with excitement.
"Well let's see, he already has three daughters, and they are turning out to be wonderful girls, especially the older one. Oh , that older daughter is just going to be a great person, but here I am getting off the subject. Now then, where was I, Oh yes, as I said he isn't rich or famous, but he can give you much more. He will teach you about patience, perseverance, responsibility and integrity. He will teach you many things but the most important thing he will teach you is about love. He will take you fishing and when you make loud clumsily noises scaring the fish away he won't lose his patience. He'll coach your softball team and cheer you on, you'll feel as if you were the most valuable player on the team. He will boast about your talents; He'll be so proud of you. He has a smile that says `I love you, I'm glad your here'. He has a wonderful sence of humor. He will tease you relentlessly, but always laugh with you, never at you. Oh, things won't always be easy. When a father loves his daughter like he will love you, he wants only the best for you and doesn't want to see you get hurt. He also knows that there are some things you will have to discover for yourself; some mistakes you will have to make for yourself. Through it all you will know that he will be there when you need him."
"Oh, it sounds just wonderful, that's the father for me, that's the father I want!" you exclaimed.
But the Lord stopped you, he wasn't quite finished. "There is one other thing, you can only have this father for 21 years, then I'm going to need him back."
"Need him back?- You mean, you are going to take him from me? Twenty-one years isn't long enough," you whispered.
"No,"God replied, "it doesn't seem long enough, or fair does it, but I'm afraid I will need him back. After that, it will be up to you to continue on with your life with the love and guidance he gave you during your time together. Well, Karen, I'll leave it up to you.
The two of you continued in silence for a short distance, but you knew, you had already made your decision. "It doesn't matter, I still want him, he's the best father a daughter could ask for."
The lord smiled for he knew you had made the right decision, he was indeed the best father a daughter could get.
With Love
